Vale Darvell M Hutchinson AM

The Trustees of the L.E.W. Carty Charitable Fund are very saddened by the death of Darvell.

Darvell and the initial Trustees were responsible for taking the Trust from the initial bequest of $200,000, following Olive Carty’s death in 1977, to a fund valued at almost $12m, with total distributions of over $8.6m.

Darvell recently supported the introduction of Carty Fellowships as the main funding mechanism of the Trust to enable mid-career researchers to continue their excellent medical research in Victoria.  The Carty Fellowship was deemed to be a 3-year fellowship, with a total support of $300,000.

Darvell broadened the Board of Trustees with the inclusion of three new Trustees over the last 5 years.  To say we benefitted from his wisdom, tenacity and advice is an absolute understatement.  We were all fortunate to have this time with him to pass on some of his skills.  He finally resigned from the Board of Trustees at the tender age of 90!  What an incredible life and contribution.

Personally, Darvell has followed my career ever since he awarded the Helen M Schutt Fellowship to me in 1988.  This was the start of his commitment to supporting young people in their research career.

Our thoughts are with his wife Barbara, his children, grandchildren and great grandchild.  Thank you for allowing us to have been a part of Darvell’s busy schedule over 41 years to enable us to deliver on the goals of the L.E.W. Carty Charitable Fund.
